building playces forsocial dreaming

GATHERPLAY

Playces began with brokering access to spaces. But over time, we came to understand that what we were really searching for were the enabling conditions for community life itself: ways for community builders on the ground to support one another, collaborate across efforts, and contribute to a larger fabric that allows more forms of collective life to emerge and endure.

More and more, we have come to feel that the challenge is not simply bringing people into the same room, but creating the conditions through which strangers can become collaborators, collaborators can become friends, and friendships can become capable of sustaining public life together. The posture required for this is not merely one of efficiency or problem-solving, but of goodwill, trust, openness, and a genuine regard for one another’s becoming. It asks for a willingness to take joy in each other’s growth, to help make one another’s visions more possible, and to see relationships not as transactional, but developmental.

This is why Playces supports people at different stages of building community. Some are beginning with little more than an idea. Others have already gathered people around them and are searching for the space, collaborators, resources, or support to grow. We help make these connections, while creating opportunities for community builders to meet one another, exchange knowledge, and become part of something larger than their individual efforts.

We are interested not only in producing events, but in helping community life take root. This means staying close to the people doing the work, solving practical problems alongside them, and learning from what actually happens on the ground. It means building patiently, resourcefully, and relationally.

Ultimately, we hope Playces can become part of a wider civic fabric: one in which people do not have to build alone, spaces can become sites of shared life, and more communities are able to begin, grow, and endure.

Gena Soh

Gena Soh is founder of Playces. In 2024, she initiated Playces with a 5-month space-sharing pilot at *SCAPE for 36 communities, 185 sessions, and an estimated 4,400 youth reached. She later activated three commercial spaces over nine weekends for 500+ participants through a NYC grant. Previously at Give.Asia, she built a network of 80 social-good communities and ran an education programme for ground-up creation that drew 90+ sign-ups and 50 repeat youth with no advertising. Through Temasek Foundation-commissioned research, she also works with foundations and family offices on philanthropy and placemaking.
