what we do

Playces works at the point where ideas for community life meet the practical conditions needed to make them real. We develop new ways for people to gather, bring together community builders, spaces and partners, and stay close to the work from the first conversation to the day people arrive.

Our projects take different forms because they begin with different places and possibilities. Through Shelf Life, the National Youth Council Youth Spaces Pilot, and our bus stop project with the Singapore Government Partnerships Office (SGPO), People’s Association (PA) and Land Transport Authority (LTA), we explored how shelves, spaces within existing businesses and everyday public infrastructure could become sites of participation, gathering and community life.

Each project begins with a different place, community and possibility, but our way of working remains consistent. We move between imagination and execution: shaping the concept, finding the right collaborators, negotiating access, designing the experience, communicating it to the public, and working through the small operational details that determine whether an idea can survive contact with reality.

We are comfortable beginning with uncertainty. We work resourcefully within real constraints, build trust across different groups, and remain responsive to what happens on the ground. Ultimately, we hope this work helps create a city in which ordinary places can become shared worlds, more people feel able to begin, and more beautiful forms of collective life can emerge and endure.
